ZIEGEL
ZIEGEL
Ziegel is a button up cardigan, knit in Brooklyn Tweed’s chunky Quarry yarn. Ziegel was originally published in amirisu’s Northern Lights - A Brooklyn Tweed Collection in December 2023. This collection was inspired by the work of Finnish architects and designers such as Alvar Aalto, Eero Saarinen, and Maija Isola.
Fiona has used Alvar Aalto as a source of inspiration for her designs in the past. This time she looked towards the Heilig Geist Kirche (Church of the Holy Spirit) in Wolfsburg, Germany, built in 1962, for that inspiration. Fiona focused on the subtle brickwork on the corners of the building. This detail brings interest to the vast, smooth walls of the exterior.

Note
This cardigan is knitted from the bottom up. It is started in one piece and once the armholes are reached, it is them divided to three sections. A few short-rows create the shoulder shaping and once the body is finished, the shoulders are seamed together using the three-needle bind off technique. The sleeves are picked up from the armholes and worked in the round. The neckband and button holes are then picked up and finished flat. Buttons are added to complete the cardigan.
The pattern is written with two different lengths, a cropped version and longer version. Three buttons are needed for the cropped version, while five are needed for the longer versions.
