AFIELD

€7.50

Afield was originally published in Pom Pom Quarterly’s Issue 31, Winter 2019. That year’s theme was natural landscapes and terrain. Fiona was inspired by images of topography. She began thinking about how knitting and agriculture share similarities. Both consist of humans manipulating a natural product or natural landscape into manicured rows and furrows for an intended outcome for our benefit. Fiona drew upon aerial images of farmland and fields for these textures.

The textures used on this cardigan mimic the rows of agricultural farmland as seen from above. Vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines cover the front and back of the cardigan. Slip stitches create the vertical and diagonal lines while small faux cables create the larger lines. Rows of garter stitch fill in the sides and also decorate the sleeves.

This product listing is for the PDF pattern for the garment pictured and described here and not the actual finished item.

Notes: Afield is worked flat and from the bottom up. The two fronts and back are worked as one piece to the armholes. The three sections are then worked individually, ending with a few short rows to shape the shoulders. The left and right collar are separated from the shoulder stitches before shoulders are joined together using the three-needle cast-off method. The left and right collar are worked to the required length and joined together at the centre back, then sewn down across the back neck width. Sleeves are picked up around the armhole opening and are mostly worked in garter stitches with the exception of a small cable running down the length of the underarm. Cuffs are finished off in 1x1 Rib. The slip stitch textures and faux cables can be worked without the use of a cable needle if preferred.
